Mixes on cd have more clarity and punch now. The dithering seems to be the best thing about Ozone. I've been using Digidesign Maxim and my cd's always sound diminished compared to my big files in the studio. Ozone's MBIT ULTRA dithering program is fantastic! It's the cleanest thing I've heard. Since I had compressed some individual tracks a little while mixing, I found the final outcome with limiter and no compressor sounded great and really open to me. This let the mix still breathe while miximizing the volume without squashing it up too much. I used the limiter lightly to bring up the mix to -.05db maximum and pulled the limiter's threshold down only until I was getting 2 or 3 db of gain reduction. I set the raw mix a few db below clipping and then set Ozone's limiting to the 'intellligent' setting with the Character setting about half way to 'smooth'. It also has a 'matching' feature that allows you to capture the sonic signature of a commercial song you like and match the sound of your mix to it in varying degrees as a starting point for eq-ing the overall mix. What I love about Ozone: the eq is phase linear and works well for an overall mix. You might use an outboard compressor if you need one but I found that working very hard to get the best possible mix before applying Ozone was KEY! I tried a tad of the compression using only a single band but didn't really like it. I finally took off all of the effects except for eq, limiting and dithering and got a wonderful result. Some of it might be good on individual tracks but not on the entire mix (it's a sexy young rock band called Stone Figs - ). I found that most of this stuff just muddies up the mix. It has things like eq, 'mastering' reverb, multi-band compression, stereo field enhancer, aural exciter, tape/tube emulator, limiting and dithering.

I record with a Pro Tools digi 002 rack.ДЄnyway, I've been experimenting with Ozone intently for about a month and have tried various combinations and settings of all it's features and have studied the manual. I purchased a suite of Izotope plugs including Trash, Spectron and Ozone for $300. Like you, Chris I wanted to see what I could do myself using plug-ins.

i can't recommend the PSP Vintage Warmer more. If you just need the levels UP, and maybe some EQin' to make stuff sound like it pretty much came from the same place. blabla mastering is an art, and all that. get a nice bunch of compressors and limiters, EQs, and you can carve out a nice finish product imo.ДЄnd thats all an overly gross simplificiation.

lovely piece of software if you ask me.ДЇrom there you get into all kinda of more 'anal' stylings.

but the PSP VW will probably do you right without much thought. you can't get into the bands like T-Racks. but sometimes thats what you need.ДЄ step up (i think) is PSP vintage warmer. you can move around the cross overs, and indepedent levels on each (its a 3 band limiter). T-Racks Limiters can get in there and you won't sound stupid. If i need some down a dirty master dynamics killin'. I love the 'i haven't used' it recomendations.
